Canada closes border to asylum seekers in response to virus outbreak

Canada and the United States implement a reciprocal arrangement to return “irregular” migrants who attempt to cross their shared border

As a part of a broader agreement struck with the United States, prime minister Justin Trudeau has announced his government will temporarily deny asylum seekers entry into Canada in an attempt to halt the flow of people into the country amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The “exceptional measure” was announced as the two countries agreed to close the 5,500 mile long shared border to all non-essential travel and as an alternative to placing those entering Canada into mandatory self-isolation.
