Cayman Islands government calls report an attempt to take over the territory

Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLaughlin has denounced a suggestion from the UK Foreign Affairs Committee that British citizens be allowed to vote and hold office in the Overseas Territories.

Premier McLaughlin likened it to to an attempt to take over the territory and threatened to take the Cayman Islands to independence should the UK seek to enforce this proposal. He also sought to downplay the importance of the report noting that it was drafted by a committee of Parliament which does not have power to impose laws on the territory but only to make recommendations.
