In an effort to curb emigration and falling GDP, the government of New Zealand has announced that it will take steps to make it easier for migrant workers to live in the country. The changes aim to bolster both the workforce and the economy with the introduction of two new residency pathways.
One pathway caters for migrants and skilled workers who meet certain experience and salary thresholds, while the other pathway is for migrants in trade and technical roles who meet the required qualification, work experience and wage thresholds.
The new policy takes into account comments from local businesses that claim it is difficult for migrants to gain residence even when they have special skills.
Earlier this year, the government relaxed its visitor visa rules to attract digital nomads or people who work remotely while traveling. Changes were also made to the Active Investor Plus visa, also known as a ‘golden visa’, which offers New Zealand residency to wealthy foreigners.
The two new residency pathways will be introduced in 2026.
