The move comes weeks after claims the Bermuda Government’s actions discriminated against nationals of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic
Mere weeks following accusations of the discriminatory treatment of nationals from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, the Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 26 of the Bermuda Immigration and Protection Act, 1956, has today published an order known as the Bermuda Immigration and Protection (Prohibition of Entry) Order, 2023 listing 115 countries whose nationals may not enter Bermuda, unless they have a travel authorisation to enter and re-enter Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
The Order provides that the so-called visa-controlled nationals must hold the required travel authorisation which must be valid for a period of 45 days from the date of the the holder’s intended departure from Bermuda. Alternatively, a person who is deemed to be a visa-controlled national may produce a letter issued by the Bermuda government attesting that they are the spouse of a Bermudian and/or they belong to Bermuda pursuant to section 11(5) of the Bermuda Constitution, 1968.
