The Bermuda Ministry of Economy and Labour releases the 2022 Digest of Statistics
Prepared by the Department of Statistics, the 2022 Digest of Statistics provides a wealth of data on Bermuda’s demographic, economic and social conditions for 2021.
It includes an in depth look at the island’s population and vital statistics noting that following the 2016 Population and Housing Census, Bermuda’s estimated year-end population continued its downward trajectory, falling to 63,648. For the fourth consecutive year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, resulting in a population decline of 233. Excess mortality occurred primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of deaths increased by 28% to a high of 727 resulting in the death rate rising from 8.8 per 1,000 population in 2020 to 11.3 per 1,000 population in 2021. The number of births decreased by 9% to 494, surpassing 2019’s record low of 525.
313 marriages were performed on island which represents an increase of 26% over the past year. The number of divorces filed decreased while those granted rose in 2021.
