Passport delays continue

Long processing times continue to create problems for travellers

With turnaround times taking as much as 20 weeks, it has been announced that the delays around the issue of passports by the Bermuda Immigration Department will not be reduced at least until the end of the month when new staff will have begun to work.

According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Economy and Labour, more staff have been hired specifically to handle the delays with the aim of returning processing times to the usual period of 11 weeks however the new employees are not expected to take up their posts until the end of August.

The additional staff will help deal with the high volume of applications, but the actual printing of the passports takes place in the United Kingdom which also adds to the processing time.

The Department of Immigration has assured the public that it remains committed to resolving these challenges and has asked for the public’s patience as it works to complete the processing of passports in a timely manner.
