Chickenpox outbreak among migrants causes tension at the detention facility in the Cayman Islands
Reports have emerged that earlier this month nine Cuban migrants were transferred from the main detention centre south of George Town, Grand Cayman to the Breakers Civic Centre located in the east of the island after several detainees were diagnosed with the chickenpox virus. Since that time, more cases of the virus have emerged with the Cayman Islands’ Customs and Border Control (CBC) confirming that a total of 20 cases of chickenpox have now been identified.
Based on unconfirmed reports, the viral outbreak caused what was referred to by the CBC as a “tense” situation which was subsequently defused.
Inmates will now no longer be separated and decision has been made on the recommendation of Public Health Cayman to allow the contagion run its course at the main detention centre with treatment being provided as necessary.
