Asylum seekers will be allowed to remain in place
According to the British Red Cross, the Home Office has confirmed that it has implemented a moratorium on the eviction of asylum seekers from government accommodation for the duration of the time the UK remains in lockdown due to coronavirus.
According to correspondence from Home Office minister Chris Philp, people will not be asked to vacate their asylum accommodation once their claim or appeal had been decided because of measures introduced this week which limit the unnecessary movement of people outside of their residences in a bid to combat the spread of Covid-19. Under normal circumstances, persons who have been granted refugee status would be required to make their own living arrangements.
The decision will be reviewed in June, but in the interim approximately 50,000 people have been saved from the threat of losing their accommodation.
