US-Mexico border closed

The border between the United States and Mexico is being closed to non-essential travel

Following the announcement that the border between the United States and Canada will be closed to all travel with the exception of essential trips, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo has announced the closure of the country’s southern border as well as stricter controls on undocumented migrants seeking to enter the country.

The news comes as countries around the world seek to clampdown on the entry of foreign nationals in a bid to control the spread of coronavirus. The US, Mexico and Canada have agreed that anyone who tries to cross into their respective countries illegally will immediately be deported to their country of origin.

Asylum seekers will no longer be detained or given due process because of the health risk such action could potentially pose for other migrants and immigration officials.
