Bermuda’s mixed status legislation to be tabled tomorrow

The announcement was made with little prior notice

In an unexpected move, it has been announced that Bermuda’s long-awaited, immigration legislation on the issue of families with mixed Bermudian status will be tabled before members of parliament in the House of Assembly tomorrow. The bill, entitled the Bermuda Immigration and Protection Amendment Act 2020, has not yet been published. Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, is also expected to make a ministerial statement on the issue.

The politically-sensitive legislation was initially scheduled to be tabled in July 2019 but after several delays its reading was postponed indefinitely. The announcement comes days after a local activist and musician caused widespread controversy over comments criticising the state of immigration on the island.
