Points system to be implemented by 2021

Prime minister Boris Johnson has pledged to retake control of the UK’s borders

Following the meeting of his brand new cabinet on February 14, a spokesman for prime minister Boris Johnson confirmed that a points-based immigration system will be implemented in the UK from 1 January 2021.

Details of the scheme have yet to be announced, but the spokesman noted the proposed new policy it would end routes for low-skilled workers to move to the UK which should have the effect of reducing overall immigration. The system is also touted to be simpler, fairer, and less discriminatory.

This change is a tent pole of the Conservative party’s Brexit promises as set out in its manifesto. Successive Tory governments had promised to reduce migration but were unable to do so because of the UK’s inability to control EU immigration.
