For the period considered, the number of deaths in Bermuda outnumbered births for the first time in at least 80 years
The Bermuda Digest of Statistics 2019 (the “Digest”) released by the Cabinet Office on February 9, reports a record low of 530 births and a record number of 532 deaths were logged over the 2017 to 2018 period making it the first time since the Digest began in 1940 that the number of deaths has exceeded the number of births.
The report also noted a 10 per cent. reduction in the number of work permits issued to 9,396 but noted this reduction was accompanied by an increase in the average length of such permits.
