Gay man granted asylum

Yew Fook Sam faced deportation after being accused of pretending to be gay

A man accused of pretending to be gay to avoid deportation to his native Malaysia where homosexual acts are illegal has been granted asylum after the Home Office accepted that a person could be both gay and single.

Sam, faced deportation earlier this year after an immigration judge questioned why he could not produce evidence of past relationships to help prove his sexuality.

The Home Office changed its initial ruling and granted Sam asylum for five years following a campaign by his friends at Open Table, an ecumenical Christian community for LGBTQ+ people. The decision is being hailed as a win against outdated gay tropes and stereotypes, and prejudices regarding sexuality.
