Bermuda’s passport problems persist

Bermuda passport holders have reported problems when travelling due to an issue with the document’s electronic code

For security reasons, the UK government is now responsible for the printing and issue of passports for its overseas territories including Bermuda. Since the change, holders of the passport have reported problems with the recognition of the document because of changes made to its electronic code.

Due to its location in the mid-Atlantic, most travel to and from the island must take place via an intransit hub which is often located in the US. Bermudians have experienced additional questioning and delays at some international borders as it is no longer clearly evident that passport holders are eligible for visa free travel to the US despite guidance issued by the International Air Transport Association.

Wayne Caines, the territory’s minister of national security, has confirmed that the government is working to resolve the matter urgently, and a joint working group has been established with Her Majesty’s Passport Office to find a solution. The minister has suggested that travellers print out and carry with them for the duration of any overseas travel documentary evidence explaining the visa exemption for Bermuda which can be found on the website of the US Consulate General. Alternatively, and particularly for travel beyond the US and the UK, he recommended that travellers apply for a US visa.
