Bermuda’s Minister of National Security Wayne Caines has described the way in which he is working to strike a balance between immigration reform and opportunities for Bermudians and businesses
Minister Caines noted that the Bill to fix the plight of so-called “mixed status” families was not entirely ready but its intention was to fill certain gaps in the existing legislation that prevent persons who were born in Bermuda from being granted Bermudian status.
The immigration reform legislation, which was the to be tabled in the House of Assembly last Friday, has been delayed and will not now be considered until parliament reconvenes in September. During the motion to adjourn, the minister noted that his government is committed to fixing the oversight caused by the existing legislation and, that while he understood the sentiments behind the demonstrations against immigration reform that were previously held outside parliament, his government had a responsibility to preserve what he termed a “sacred history”, that included slavery and its abolition, and to “make opportunities for business to thrive in Bermuda”.
