Mere days after announcing its intention, the government of Bermuda has withdrawn a decision to table draft immigration legislation
The bill which was intended to address the law relating to “mixed status” families will now not be tabled as “important elements” remain unresolved. It will now be tabled in September.
The decision comes after a series of meetings with parliamentary drafters and the government policy team.
At the start of the parliamentary session, the Bermuda government pledged to implement comprehensive immigration reform however Minister of National Security Wayne Caines today announced that it would be irresponsible to present legislation that did not fully meet the needs of Bermuda. The minister noted that particular care was being taken in the drafting of the legislation to ensure the right balance was achieved to enable the justice mixed status families deserve.
