Long-awaited immigration legislation to be tabled

The Minister of National Security Wayne Caines has announced that legislation to address the anomalies caused by ‘mixed status’ families will be presented to Bermuda’s House of Assembly on Friday

This move is designed to meet a deadline which the minister had long been promising, namely that his government would table some form of immigration reform legislation during this legislative session.

The legislation will be put forward on the very last day Parliament meets before it takes its customary summer break on July 31, and will only deal with this very limited aspect of the law. Full and comprehensive immigration reform is yet to be addressed and remains a work in progress. As the legislation will only be tabled, it will not be debated until the legislature reconvenes in the autumn.

The legislation has been a long time coming and input and consultation from the general public was requested on several occasions. Previously, it had been announced that the legislation would be put forward on July 12 and the minister declined to give a reason for the delay.
