Long-standing protections against active serving members’ families to be removed

Reports are emerging that the temporary protection for immigrant families known as ‘Parole in Place’ may be brought to an end

Parole in Place is a temporary protection extended to immigrant families while a member is on active deployment overseas. It was designed to give a service member peace of mind from the possibility that their family might be subject to deportation while they are out of the country serving in the US military. The protection only applies in certain limited cases.

The programme was started under President George W Bush however under the Trump Administration there appears to be a scaling back of its provisions and a suggestion that the programme may be terminated altogether. Additionally, there is also no certainty that the change will be grandfathered in or that those who have already received the protection will be able to keep it.

Lawyers are now moving to file applications on behalf of clients before the deadline. The US government actively recruits immigrants and hundreds of thousands foreign nationals serve in the US military as it is one route to obtaining US citizenship.

It has been reported that the programme could be terminated as early as next month.
