A decision regarding whether the 2020 census can ask persons about their citizenship status is expected to be handed down by the US Supreme Court today
Immigration rights advocates are however asking for the decision to be delayed in light of new evidence that has surfaced and casts doubt on the rationale for asking the question.
The evidence was found on the laptop of a now deceased political consultant, and confirms that the citizenship question did not originate, as was initially suggested, as a request from the Justice Department, nor was it about the enforcement of the voting rights clause. Instead, the question was allegedly added by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross as part of a strategy to restrict the count of Hispanics and other immigrants in 2020 in order to curtail the influence of Hispanics in American politics in general.
Immigration advocates would like the case to be returned to the lower courts and reheard in light of this new evidence before the Supreme Court weighs in.
