Call for mixed status families in Bermuda to be counted

Mixed status families – where one person holds Bermuda status or permanent residency while the rest of the family do not – have been asked to attend the Cedarbridge Academy auditorium tomorrow with identification

The request issued by the Immigration Department is part of the next phase of immigration reform on the island. Minister of National Security Wayne Caines said in a press release issued today, that the information gathering session was designed to confirm the total number of mixed-status families on the island.

He took pains to reassure the public that the information collected during the event will be kept private and not used for any public purpose, likening the exercise to an application for a driver’s licence.

After the initial session tomorrow, the public can attend the Ministry of National Security located at Global House, Church Street, Hamilton, between the hours of 12pm and to 4pm to provide their information until July 12.

Minister Caines again reiterated that changes to the law as regards mixed status families will be dealt with during the current legislative session. The government also has plans to tackle problems faced by long-term residents.
