Prisoners moved to Cayman Islands’ Immigration Detention Centre

Four male prisoners have been transferred to Cayman’s Immigration Detention Centre at Fairbanks, a low-security, a short-term facility for immigration purposes that houses male and female migrants who have requested asylum in the Cayman Islands. The move is aimed at relieving overcrowding in the island’s jails and was first proposed in July of last year. “Suitably selected” prisoners have been designated for the new prison ward that will be known as the Enhanced Reintegration Unit.

The Unit has the capacity to house up to 21 low-risk prisoners who will work community placements during business hours. Revised security measures and protocols have been put in place in order to retrofit the facility to make it suitable for inmates, while ensuring that the privacy and safety of the migrants is not compromised.
