Changes to Bermuda’s immigration law and policy to be tabled

John Rankin, the Governor of Bermuda delivered the Throne Speech on behalf of the Government yesterday. During his speech, he laid out a number of measures that will be dealt with during the next legislative session, among which included a simplification of the rules regarding Bermudian status, the status of permanent resident’s certificate holders and new rights for “mixed status” families.

The Government also announced that work-permit procedures will be changed to allow companies with a track record of hiring, training and promoting Bermudians access to “a more streamlined process” while those that discriminate against Bermudians in hiring will be subject to additional scrutiny and graduated penalties.
