A spokeswoman for the group Supporting Fair Immigration Reform said the public have been kept in the dark about the Government’s plans for immigration reform, and that the lack of progress on the issue was a broken promise by the Government.
The group had previously been told legislation would be passed in February 2018, but no meetings or interim reports have been released since that time and the legislation has not materialised.
The representative stated that the group had not been provided with an update on the status of the proposed reform since July when they were advised that the committee was in the final stages of producing recommendations to be included in their document to be reviewed by Cabinet.
National Security Minister Wayne Caines who was given responsibility for immigration from the Home Affairs Ministry last week in a restructuring of Cabinet has since claimed that moving this legislation forward is one of his priorities, but noted that this must be weighed against the need to maintain the delicate balance of ensuring transparency, fairness and a seamless process for expatriate workers while ensuring Bermudians are given the opportunity to grow and develop in local and international business.
