Prodigy allowed to stay

Nine-year-old chess prodigy Shreyas Royal and his family have been allowed to stay in the UK.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has made the “personal decision” to allow the family to stay on the grounds that Royal is one of the most gifted chess players in his generation and the UK’s immigration system welcomes highly-talented individuals from across the globe.

Although the boy has lived in Britain since he was three years old, his family was told they would have to return to India when his father’s work visa expired in September.

His father will now be able to apply for the Tier 2 work visa, which is valid for up to five years, without needing to leave the UK. It will be sponsored by his employers, Tata Consultancy Services, and will allow Royal and his mother to stay in the UK as dependents.
